The functionalist perspective is a branch of sociology and has a number of theories to explain functionalism. The functionalist perspective is based on the works of many theorists such as Talcott Parsons, Herbert Spencer, Robert K Merton, Emile Durkheim. This blog will mainly be focused on the works of Emile Durkheim. Functionalist perspective states that society is one whole that contains interconnected parts that work together to ensure that society works together in harmony to maintain balance and equilibrium for the whole.
Emile Durkheim constructed a theory called Functionalism, this theory places emphasis on societal equilibrium. If ever something occurs to disrupt the flow of society society must work together to ensure that society is at an stable state. Society is a system of interrelated parts that cannot work without each other, these parts make up the whole of society and if one part converts it in turn has an impact on the whole.
